Sleep, mood, and cognitive/psychomotor performance were disrupted during night shift work when research participants received placebo compared to when they received modafinil. The upper panels of Figure 3 display selected ratings from a subjective mood questionnaire that varied between the two experimental conditions. Ratings of 'Alert' were decreased during the night shift, while ratings of 'Can’t Concentrate’ and 'Sleepy' were increased.
The data from this study support the hypothesis that a period of acclimation greater than three days is needed prior to shifting to a new work schedule.
